Research on Post-Colonialism

12 years A Slave:Trailer

By watching this trailer we can see that a black man called Solomon is trying to fight for his survival and freedom. Solomon family look wealthy and rich; an ordinary american family. however, during the pre-civil war in united states many black people were treated badly and their wealth and property was taking away. Then these people were sold to one person to the other.  Facing cruelty as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity. Through the collapse of identity and white prevalence, 12 Years a Slave tries and subverts order and chaos in post-colonial America. Also we can refer it to the Avarado theory due to the fact that these black man (slaves) are seen to be 'Dangerous' to society although they are in a lower status than the white men they still fear them as they crave freedom and will kill without thinking twice.

D Jango unchained:  Trailer

This film was based on an African-American man wanting to rescue his wife from a brutal Mississippi plantation owner.2 years before the Civil War pits brother-against-brother, German-born fugitive hunter Dr. King Schultz  arrives in America determined to capture the outlaw Brittle brothers dead or alive. In the midst of his search a freed slave and skilled tracker who seeks to rescue his beloved wife Broomhilda.  They plan to haunt down other outlaw during the winter in order to free his wife. In many shots in the trailer they show off the black guy’s knowledge and how the American listens to his words and almost obeys them. This goes against the topical stereotype of a black man, as we expect the Americans to be the one leading, to this "civilised" group of people, slavery was an educating enterprise. In return for the gift of civilisation and, let's not forget, Christianisation, slaves were expected to obey and to serve. slavery and race are exhibited through the lens of violence, blood and death. D jango is a slave with attitude and panache. In addition, we can refer this to the Frantz Fanon theory (black skin white mask) as he speaks in an educated tone.

In comparison, you can see that both trailers are quite similar in terms of the representation and the characteristics of the African-American and American themselves.

Chris Rock is an African American comedian who is on television. In terms of Alvardos theory of racial representations, he is considered as humorous he is a comedian and therefore is not represented or looked upon as dangerous.
